"What happened to our pattern standard in Kindergarten ? " "Well I'm going to teach it anyway, because it is important ! " After listening to concerns about patterning in Kindergarten, I felt the need to dig a little deeper. Patterning is not specifically spelled out in our standards until 4 th grade, but they are in there at every grade level ! Subitizing

Can you look at a carton of eggs and tell how many are left just by looking? Can you determine the number of dots of a page without counting each one? How about the number of students in a classroom without counting them one by one? If you can say yes to these questions, then you are a subitizer! Click on the image for an app for the iPad ($0.99). I see this working well with 1st -3rd graders! You could have it set up as a reinforcement center or try it on the Promethean Board as a whole group response. Mental Math Starts with Ten Frames

Why do I need to do math in my head when I have a calculator? The answer is multifaceted. Being able to perform math in your head demonstrates an understanding of the math, proficiency and speed - not to mention you can impress so many people with your skills! The only way to excel at mental math is to constantly practice it! It must be embedded in the way we do math every day. Since we adopted Singapore Math a year ago, I have observed the older children and adults are the ones who struggle! That is because it makes sense to someone just learning about number sense and place value and the older one is the more habits we have to change. Mental math starts in Kindergarten with ten frames. A ten frame is simply that - a frame with ten spaces. These spaces are then filled with "dots".
