Which One Doesn't Belong

The first five minutes of your math class are so important to set the stage for the upcoming lesson.  You need to engage your students early so you can avoid disengaged learners during your teaching block.  Finding fun and engaging activities in class can be challenging, so I here is one of my favorite activities!

"Which One Doesn't Belong" is an activity that allows all students to participate in.0514 as there is not a single correct answer!   These problems spark deep mathematical thinking and are great for whole group (or small group) discussions.  There are several resources available for "Which One Doesn't Belong", but a well-known creator and a site that I use is Mashupmath.  See a sample from this website below.

Here's an Example:

Consider the graphic below and the different responses by Students A, B, and C.

Student A says: I think 27 doesn’t belong because it is the only value that is not divisible by four. Also, 27 is the only odd number in the group.

Student B says: I think 64 doesn’t belong because all of the other numbers are either a perfect square or a perfect cube, but 64 is both!

Student C says: I think 16 doesn’t belong because it is not a perfect cube and the other three are.
